Scotnet Centrex

Scotnet Centrex is a hosted VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phone solution designed for business customers with multiple phone users either in one location or across multiple sites.

Traditional phone switches were large server-type boxes, hosted within the business premises and connected to Openreach's network via ISDN or multi-line PSTN circuits. As the UK transitions from analogue voice services, digital phone services offer far more flexibility to businesses, as the requirement for a local phone switch is removed.

Moving the legacy phone switch function into 'the cloud' essentially means creating a virtual phone switch within a data centre - removing the need for expensive inter-connecting circuits between offices. A business could therefore have 100 users in 100 different locations, all part of the same phone network, but all simply connecting directly to the internet via any means available. This also removes the need to maintain an expensive phone switch.
